Western Forest Products Tentative Agreement

With companies and employees located primarily on the coasts of British Columbia and Washington State, Western is a leading supplier of high-quality forest products products to global markets. Western has a wood capacity of more than 1.1 billion board feet from eight sawmills and four reprocessing plants. The company derives wood from its private property, long-term licenses, First Nations agreements and market purchases. Western complements its production with a wholesale program that offers customers a full range of special products. CBC does not yet know the details of the agreement.

Western Forest Products and United Steelworkers entered into an interim collective agreement after a seven-month labour dispute. Why this is important: if the agreement were ratified, it would be an eight-month strike, the longest in the history of coastal forest in B.C. Estone said that the forest industry generally sees an increase in demand in the spring. Campbell River Mayor Andy Adams said his community was affected by the strike and the agreement was long overdue „This dispute has cost workers and their families a huge toll, as well as the entire coastal forest community,“ he said in a February 6 press release. „We want everyone back to work.“ The end could be close to a coastal forest strike that recently began its eighth month. „(This is the longest strike we have ever had on the B.C coast could be the longest forestry worker strike in B.C history,“ Butler said. „It`s certainly not a goal we tried to achieve when we started.“ The agreement has yet to be ratified by members of the United Steelworkers. The Union Bargaining Committee has indicated that it will recommend that its members accept it. „In the first few months, people thought the deal would be done, but if it hit the sixth, seventh and now eighth, it`s absolutely unacceptable,“ he says. „The domino effect it has on all coffee shops, grocery stores, restaurants – the entire service sector has wreaked havoc and, here in Campbell River, is affecting the service sector that provides the forest industry,“ he says. Western Forest Products Ltd. announced on Monday (February 10th) that a preliminary agreement had been reached with United Steelworkers Local 1-1937.

The agreement is still subject to ratification by union members, but the union`s bargaining committee will recommend that members approve the agreement.
